Non-Uniform Day for Haiti
Wednesday’s non-uniform day in aid of the earthquake victims in Haiti raised the sum of six hundred euro. Thanks to all parents and pupils who contributed so generously to the fund-raising effort.

Senior Cup Campaign Launch
A special ceremony to launch this year’s Senior Cup campaign was held in the Hall on Monday. All pupils from Prep School and Secondary School attended. Past pupils Donncha O’Callaghan and Tomás O’Leary were on hand to present the jerseys to the 2010 squad. Best of luck to them!

Chess Nuts
Early morning chess has become very popular in CBC. Most mornings, six to ten games are in progress from about 8.15am. As can be seen from the photos, chess is a spectator sport.
Weatherman
The weather has been very much in the news lately and Sixth Class pupil James Keaveney has taken a special interest in how information on climate is gathered. He built a weather station consisting of a thermometer to measure maximum and minimum daily temperature, a precipitation gauge to measure rainfall and a barometer to measure atomopheric pressure. James constructed the barometer himself, using ordinary household items. James then demonstrated his weather station, very ably, to his class.

Parents Council Dinner
The Parents Council dinner is on Friday next, 15 January. If you did not get your ticket yet, tickets are still available from members of the Parents Council. Your support would be appreciated for this, the fist event organised by the new Prep School Parents Council.
School on Wednesday
At lunchtime today, the Minister for Education withdrew his instruction to all schools to close until Thursday next. Therefore, since the weather is forecasted to improve, it has been decided that CBC Preparatory School and Secondary School will open on Wednesday 13 January.
Pantomime
On Friday last, all the pupils, apart from Junior Infants, took the ten minute walk from the Prep School to the Everyman Theatre to see a performance of Aladdin.
Christmas Holiday Period
Vaccination
Swine Flu vaccinations will take place on Monday 21 December, from 8.30am to 9.30am approximately. Only pupils who have brought in (or bring in) a signed parental permission form will be vaccinated. Parents may wait while vaccination takes place.
Tuesday’s Nativity Play/Concert
Tuesday’s nativity play/concert takes place in the Secondary School Hall at the earlier time of 10.45am to facilitate parents who wish to attend the Scoil Mhuire ceremony in St Mary’s. It will finish at approximately 11.15am. Parents are invited to come along to the Canteen in the Secondary College before the concert, from about 10.00am for light refreshments. Pupils may be taken home by parents when they leave the concert, but pupils may, if they wish, remain until 1.00pm finishing time.
Parent Teacher Meeting
A Parent-Teacher Meeting will take place on Thursday 7 January, the day before the Prep School re-opens after the Christmas Holidays. If you wish to book a timeslot for your meeting, go to your son’s classroom on Monday or Tuesday of this week and write your name on the list pinned to the outside of the classroom door.
School Christmas Concert
Concert: Final Rehearsals
Excitement is mounting as the time of the Christmas concert draws closer. A final dress rehearsal was held this morning and everything is now ready for the performance at 7.30pm this evening. Parents are asked to drop their sons to the Secondary School building by 7.10pm to give some time to get organised.

Hopefully the pottery will be dried out soon and ready to be given as Christmas presents
Parents Council Fund-Raising Dinner
The Parents Council Fund-Raising Dinner is scheduled for Friday 15 January 2010 at the Montenotte Hotel. It is hoped to have eight tables, one for each class in the Preparatory School. Class representatives will be selling tickets from tomorrow onwards (fifty euro per ticket) and hope to sell a minimum of ten pairs per class group. Tickets will be on sale in the school tomorrow, Friday from 12.30pm to 3.00pm. Tickets will also be available at the Christmas Concert on Thursday next.
Money raised by the event will fund the painting of colourful patterns for games onto the school yard. The work will be carried out by a company specialising in this kind of work. The patterns will be chemically fixed to the yard surface and will be very durable.
Hardy Boys
The frost did not stop the hardy boys from the Prep School getting on with their sporting activities on the Astroturf.
Christmas Concert Date Changed
The date of the Christmas Concert has been changed from Thursday 3 December to Thursday 10 December. Please note that the Preparatory School will be open as usual on Thursday 3 December.

Water Supply Situation
CBC Preparatory School, as already stated, will be closed on tomorrow, Tuesday for health and safety reasons (the Secondary School will also be closed).
On Wednesday 25th, both the Preparatory School and the Secondary School will be open as usual. Though CBC’s piped water has been cut off, a tanker will deliver a supply which should be adequate for the needs of both schools. We hope to be able to remain open on Thursday and Friday also.
Business as Usual Tomorrow in CBC
CBC Preparatory and Secondary School will open as usual tomorrow, Monday 23 November. Though the water supply to the school has been cut off since yesterday, there is a sufficient supply in the roof tanks to last one day. Pupils in the Secondary School will finish at 12 noon as planned to facilitate a Second Year Parent Teacher Meeting, which will also go ahead as scheduled. The Preparatory School will finish at the normal time.
Pupils should bring drinking water to school with them as the water fountains connected to the mains will not be functioning.
It is too early to say whether the College will be open on Wednesday as no information is available on how long the supply of water will remain cut off and we have not managed to arrange an alternative supply as yet.
Astroturf
Though the city centre was flooded this morning due to the torrential rain of the past few days, the sun was shining brightly. The boys of Third and Fourth Class were looking forward to tag rugby, but the piches in Lansdowne were water logged and unplayable. However, the Astroturf all-weather pitch lived up to its name and the games went on.

Science Week
Third and Fourth Class went to the Discovery 2009 Science exhibition in the City Hall this morning at 9.00am. It runs from 9-21 November. The walk took fifteen minutes and the weather remained reasonably dry. Pupils had the opportunity to visit the various stands, choosing whichever ones interested them. The ‘Slime Station’ seemed to be the favourite. Later the full group attended a film show in the ‘Stardome’ set up by the Blackrock Castle Observatory. After that, it was back t school again and, luckily, we got there between showers.
