The Romanian Ambassador to Ireland is to visit CBC Prep School on Friday 7 May. Mr Iulian Buga is helping to celebrate Europe Day, 9 May. For more information on Europe day, click the following link: Europe Day.
Assessment Test
Again this year, a much bigger number of pupils applied for places in CBC Secondary School than the school could possibly cater for. The large numbers are whittled down by applying the school’s entry criterea. Prep School boys are lucky, as they are the first to be offered places. This year again, the entire Sixth Class will move on to CBC Secondary. This morning’s Assessment Test was for boys who have already been given places in next September’s First Year classes. The test is for internal school purposes only.
Confirmation Day
This is a busy week for Sixth Class. They arrived back from Bath on Monday; today they made their Confirmation in St Patrick’s, and on Saturday they will sit for the Secondary School Assessment test. Below are some pictures of Confirmation Day: Boys from the Fourth and Fifth Class Choir and musicians from the Secondary School who helped to make the day a success.
Some Photos from the Bath Tour
The Sixth Class Bath touring group returned to CBC last night at 10.00pm after an eventful four day tour. The following photos show some of the tour
activities.
Bath Rugby Tour
The Sixth Class rugby tour to Bath went ahead despite the grounding of aircraft and the cancellation of the flight from Cork to Bath. The Sixth Class parents took the initiative in trying to arrange for the class to go by ferry when the flight was cancelled. Eventually, tickets were found to be available for the Rosslare-Fishguard ferry. All parents were consulted and the overwhelming majority were for rearranging to travel by ferry. Special thanks to Ms Anne McCarthy the Sixth Class representative on the Parents Council and Mr Niall Brown, parent, who pushed the right buttons.
The boys enjoyed the ferry crossing and withstood the two long bus journeys, first from Cork to Rosslare and later from Fishguard to Bath.
Three games were arranged for today: CBC had one draw, one loss and one win. The boys also attended the Bath v Sale Sharks match held at the Rec in Bath. Later they went to the cinema.

Rugby Tour to Bath
The Sixth Class rugby tour to Bath will take place this weekend. The class will meet on Friday at 1.00pm at Cork Airport, flying out at 3.15pm. After arrival in Bath and settling in to the tour accommodation, the boys will take a walking tour of the city, followed by dinner and a trip to the cinema.
On Saturday, the group will travel by coach to Walcott Rugby Club for two fixtures. The highlight of the afternoon is attendance at the Bath v Sale Sharks rugby match at the Rec.
On Sunday, the CBC boys will travel to Bristol University to play St Brendan’s and Avon RFC. The game will be followed by lunch. At 3.00pm, it’s back to Bristol Airport for the return flight to Cork at 5.00pm
Easter Rugby Camp
The Easter Rugby Camp, held from Tuesday to Friday this week, was a great success. Seventy-five pupils in all participated: a total of sixty-eight from CBC and seven of their friends from other schools. The first day was a bit wet and all the lads went home covered in mud, but the rest of the week was nice and sunny and provided more fun for the boys and less washing for their mothers. Each participant was presented with a rugby ball in the CBC school colours as a souvenir of the camp.
Sixth Class Successes
Sixth Class boys Fahd Baig Mirza and Conall Williamson won medals in Cricket and at Feis Maitiú repectfully. Fahd’s medal was won in an All-Munster competition playing with Harlequins; Conall won no less than three medals, all awarded for first place, one in Poetry, one in Prose Reading and the third for Irish Singing. Well done to both!

Mr Rajender Singh
Mr Rajender Singh, International Handicrafts Artist, Delhi, gave a demonstration of Paper Craft for all Preparatory School pupils this morning. Mr Singh, using only scissors and coloured paper (no glue or pins), made flowers, garlands, paper chains and other decorations during the presentation of his craft. His book, which costs three euro, is on sale in the Preparatory School today and tomorrow. It gives full instructions on how to make 25 items from paper.

Open Evening
The Open Evening scheduled for Tuesday 9 March has been cancelled. Parents interested in sending their sons to the Preparatory School who contacted the school over the past school year, were invited to call to the school during normal school hours in order to view the school in operation during a school day. This policy has proved to be very successful. Parents who have not taken advantage of this arrangement so far, are invited to phone the school (021 4559209) and make an individual appointment to come during normal school hours. The parents who called so far, many of whom brought their sons with them, were very pleased with the insight into the school which the experience gave them. It gave them the essential information to make up their minds as to whether what the Preparatory School was offering was what they were looking for for their sons.

Brother Reynolds’ Mass
The Preparatory School pupils (apart from Junior and Senior Infants) and all the Secondary School pupils, attended a special Mass for the late Brother Reynolds this morning in St Mary’s, Popes Quay. It coincided with his funeral Mass in Dublin. Many parents, past pupils and others associated with ‘Christians’ also came along so that the large church was full to capacity.
Death of Br Reynolds
As a mark of respect to the late Brother Laurence Reynolds, former Principal of Christian Brothers College, CBC pupils and staff will attend a special Mass in St Mary’s, Popes Quay, at 12.00 noon on Friday 26 February, the day of his funeral in Dublin, after which the College will close for the remainder of the day.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
Br L.P. Reynolds studied in Marino College of Education, at UCC and UCD. He took his Masters degree at Boston College. He first came to CBC in 1962 and also spent periods of his professional career in O’Connell School, North Monastery, CBC Monkstown, Mount Sion and Ard Scoil Ris where he was Principal and the driving force behind the building of the new school. As a teacher in CBC, nothing was impossible to Br Renolds. He trained the school choir, produced an opera, coached rugby teams and at the same time followed a heavy schedule of work in the school. He was Principal of Christian Brothers College from 1984-1994. He assumed responsibility for the building of the new Secondary College and Preparatory School. Any pupil who would like to see Br Reynold’s achievements need but look round him.
Easter Rugby Camp
Plans are well advanced for a CBC Preparatory School rugby camp to be held during the second week of the Easter Holidays: Tuesday 6 April to Friday 9 April. The camp is open to Preparatory School boys from First to Sixth Class. They may also invite their friends from other schools, numbers permitting. Looking Back on the Week
On Monday, Fourth Class took part in an indoor hurling competition. After a great sporting day, the team reached the final, but were defeated by a strong Beaumont side. Well done to all!
On Tuesday, Sister Nuala, a missionary Nun, called to the school and gave a talk about the Third World and how conditions there impact on children. Fourth and Fifth Classes came together to listen to her presentation.
On Wednesday, it was the turn of Rang a Trí to take part in a hurling event. They reached the finals of the Third Class indoor hurling competition. It was a great achievement by all as it ws the first time that the class experienced this game.
